All by myself! Don’t want to be ALL BY MYSELF! (Bridget Jones Reference)
Sometimes, despite being surrounded by:
- classrooms on either side
- teaching staff
- and admin
You can still feel totally and completely ALONE.
I’ve been there. Schools where the teaching staff broke off into cliques. Schools where the admin was so scary that teachers hid in their classrooms. Schools where veteran teachers didn’t welcome new teachers. Over the course of my 10 year teaching career I’ve been in many different school environments where teacher camaraderie wasn’t a top priority. To be honest, it really affected my teacher spirit. I was grumpy, agitated, moody, and didn’t look forward to work.
Every staff has their own way of supporting or NOT supporting one another. Every principal has their idea of how to bring a staff together.
Side-note For Principals: Giving teachers a little time at the beginning of a staff meetings to share ‘celebrations’ IS NOT TEAM BUILDING.
I see teachers, like you, living and breathing for your job. We’re certainly not in it for the pay, right? Yes, there are rewards that come with being a teacher, but it’s nice to get a little more from time to time. And by MORE I mean SUPPORT, and ENCOURAGEMENT, and RECOGNITION!
Funny thing is, when I’m appreciated, celebrated, and feel part of a team… Guess what? I WORK HARDER!
You don’t need to rely solely on admin. Take matters into YOUR OWN HANDS!
I am a FIRM BELIEVER that:
Happy Teachers = Happy Schools
Teacher Appreciation doesn’t have to come around 1 week a year.
With that being said, here are some ideas to improve staff positivity at your school.
- Have Your Staff Take The 30 Day TEACH HAPPY CHALLENGE
I created this challenge!
It can be completed as a staff or individually. This school printed a copy of the challenge for each teacher. I also love how they made a BULLETIN BOARD for the staff. Every time a staff member completes a challenge they initial their name on the board. BRILLIANT!
- Ashley Marquez, Teach Create Motivate LOVES spreading staff sunshine! She has LOADS of FREEBIE Staff Sunshine Crafts you can print HERE. MY FAVORITE of Ashley’s is her STAFF SHOUT OUTS!
Check out the bulletin board Hannah, The Friendly Teacher, created WITH Ashley’s staff shoutouts! LOVE IT!
- TAKE WHAT YOU NEED Positive Bulletin Board
Put positive and encouraging notes in each of these envelopes!
- Oooooohhh THIS is a cool idea. Assemble A Happy Teacher Traveling Cart!
Think of ALL the possibilities. Snacks, treats, goodies. The cart could be filled with anything HAPPY! Every month a grade level could rotate who stocks the cart.
- Add Little Thought Bubbles Or Notes In The Staff Bathroom
I hope these ideas have sparked you creativity! If your staff is feeling blah make a CHANGE now.
I regret years of my teaching career where I felt down. Why didn’t I just take matters into my own hands?
Shine bright at your school. Don’t be swayed by the Negative Nancys. The happiness you bring makes teaching SO MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE for everyone at your school!
