How often during a teaching day are you
Not that often? You are not alone.
For many years, I ran around school like a frenetic teacher chicken. Constantly trying to put out fires. It’s like every day I was stepping on teaching landmines: behavior issues, an angry parent email, new standards, etc.
Serene? Ya right!
And then, one small thought adjustment changed everything! Suddenly, I had a new outlook AND my sanity was saved.
Hear me out:
If someone asked you to pass the salt and pepper shakers at the dinner table, what would you do?
Pass them, right? No questions asked. Quick. Fast. Hand them over.
Now, what if someone asked you to pass over your serenity?
Would you give it up so easily? Would you pass it over no questions asked? Here ya go, take ALL my calm!
Yikes. That doesn’t sit as well with me.
The thing is…
Every time an issue with a student arises, emails fill your inbox, frustration occurs with admin, the copy machine breaks down, testing stress mounts…do you hand over your serenity?
The old me would have put up a fight. OF COURSE I GIVE AWAY MY SERENITY! I’m a TEACHER! My serenity is stolen from me every second of the day. There is so much on my plate and EVERYONE wants something from me.
I NOW realize that nothing steals my serenity. I have the ultimate power. It’s completely my choice to lose my cool.
Yes, situations at school pop up constantly, BUT I am in control of my feelings and reactions.
This was a HUGE ah-ha moment!
Here’s my challenge for you.
The next time a stressful situation arises during your teaching day, PAUSE.
Visualize your serenity on a platter. Are you going to hand it over OR instead…
- Take a deep breath.
- Ask for more time to think about your response.
- Make light of the situation and smile.
- Ask yourself, “What would LOVE do in this situation?”
- HALT! Are you reacting because you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired.
- Ask a trusted friend for advice.
- Walk away.
